AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN CHARLES DICKENS? NOVEL ENTITLED ?A TALE OF TWO CITIES?

ABSTRACT
The title of this research is ?An Analysis of Figurative Language in Charles Dickens? Novel Entitled A Tale of Two Cities.? The objectives of the study are to find the type of figurative languages which are used in the novel and to find the meaning of each figurative language. In conducting this research, the researcher uses semantics as a study of meaning in language and figurative language as a creative language which is often found in the sentence. The method which is used in collecting the data is qualitative data analysis because the researcher collected the data by reading each story from the novel and then she must sort and interpret information to extract patterns and meaning. The result shows that there are 292 sentences which are found in the novel. From 292 sentences, there are 86 sentences or 29,4% of metaphor, 79 sentences or 27,05% of simile, 68 sentences or 23,3% of personification, 30 sentences or 10,3% of hyperbole, 20 sentences or 6,8% of symbolic language and 9 sentences or 3,08% of oxymoron.It can be concluded that learning figurative language can be found in the novel. Figurative language has an important part because figurative language can create an imaginative pleasure in literary works.
