Communication is used to interact in the daily life. People need language to make interaction between one and another. Communication with other is one way to express their feeling, ideas and need. When they do communication with other, they try to deliver their feeling, idea and emotion by saying some utterances. In order to have a good communication, people need to understand what their partner says. But, sometimes there is misunderstanding between speaker and hearer. What the speaker intend is not the same as the hearer?s grasp (implicit meaning). So people have to know how to use language in communication to avoid misunderstanding.
The purpose of the study is the first to describe the types of illocutionary acts and find the dominant illocutionary acts used in the movie ?Moonlight?.
In this research, the researcher used qualitative research to analyze the illocutionary act spoken by the main character in Moonlight movie. The design is qualitative because the analysis does not use statistics procedure. Beside, it tried to find out the type of illocutionary act in the Moonlight movie. Meanwhile, this research uses descriptive method since it describes the types of illocutionary acts.
The finding shows that there are some types of illocutionary act found in this movies, the researcher found 125 utterances in this movie that spoken by the main character in ?MOONLIGHT? movie. According to the type of illocutionary act, the researcher found 65 utterances of Representatives, 42 utterances of Directives, 17 utterances of Expressive, 1 utterance of Declarative and none for Commissives. So the most dominant utterances in this movie are Representative types.
Based on this research, it is found that illocutionary acts can be produced in most of utterances. As the result of this study, its suggested for the students, lectures, teachers, and for the readers to learn more about illocutionary acts to improve their knowledge about speech acts especially illocutionary acts.
