This study is intended to describe the reading strategies are used by EFL students in Extensive Reading class and to know the most frequent reading strategies used by EFL students in Extensive Reading class at sixth semester of English study program of PGRI Ronggolawe University Tuban.
The method used in this study was descriptive research. The subject of this study was 2014 A & B class at English study program of PGRI Ronggolawe University Tuban which consists of 45 students. In this research, the instruments of collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The scale of the questionnaire items taken from the Original Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) by Mokhtari and Sheorey, (2002). The questionnaire were analyzed using Likert scale from 1 to 5, and the interviews were descriptively. All of instruments are used to know reading strategies used by the students.
The result indicated that there are three kinds of reading strategies used by EFL students at PGRI Ronggolawe University, such as global reading strategy, problem solving reading strategy, and support reading strategy. And all of the students from all levels of proficiency used all reading strategies, including global reading strategy, problem solving reading strategy, and support reading strategy. The students with high level use problem solving reading strategy more often than the other strategies. It is followed by global reading strategy and problem solving reading strategy. The medium students? level mostly applied problem solving reading strategy. It is followed by support reading strategy and global reading strategy. But the students with low level use support reading strategy more often than the other strategies. It is followed by problem solving reading strategy. And no one of students use global reading strategy.
From all levels of proficiency problem solving reading strategy became the most frequent reading strategy used by the students. Support reading strategy became the strategy that is sometimes used by the students. Meanwhile global reading strategy became the strategies that are seldom used by the students.
