The nature of this study is action research. This study aimed at improving the students? reading understanding and learning outcomes by using the story web strategy in the process of reading teaching and learning.
This research consisted of two cycles. The subjects of this research were 34 students of class VIII-C in MTs Muhammadiyah-19 Labuhan. The research instrument was collected through Test form. The data were in the form of pre-test and post-test and students? worksheet. The researcher used qualitative method to analyzing the data.
Based on the result of data analysis since pre-test up post-test of cycle 2, the average of study result gained in pre-test with average value was 66.02. whereas in post test of first cycle after applying story web strategy had enhanced 77.64. Next, the second cycle had enhanced 81.17. based on the learning activities which have accurred the enhancing from the first to cycle second. From the research findings, it showed that story web strategy could improve the students? reading comprehension of narrative text.
Overall, the finding of the study indicates that : (1) The strategy of the story web is able to improve the students? reading comprehension. (2) The story web strategy was also able to facilitate the students? in guessing the meaning of the unknown words from the context. (3) The strategy could help the student to understand in the reading activities. They did not need to read all of the words in the text they read, They only needed to read to specific information.
