Questioning is typically implemented by teachers in their teaching process. It is a basic method implemented by teacher in order to build interaction in the classroom and also to stimulate the students to perform their speaking skill in target language. Unfortunately, some teachers do not realize about the importance of using appropriate questioning strategy to help the students more understand about the questions.
The present study was conducted in the second grade SMA N 1 Rengel which attempted to know the teacher?s questioning strategies in English class, and the teacher?s reasons in using questioning strategy.
This is a descriptive qualitative research; the data were collected by recording the teaching and learning process and interviewing the English teacher. The transcript of the teaching and learning process and the interview were made. Each type of questions used by the teacher in teaching the students as well as students? oral responses were analysed, while the interview result was used as additional information for this study.
Based on the analysis, it was found that there are four questioning strategies used by the teacher in teaching English, they are: repeating/rephrasing (45%), narrowing by giving a clue (14%), giving alternative (21%), and providing wait time (20%). It can be considered that the dominant questioning strategy is repeating/ rephrasing. Based on the interview with the teacher, it was revealed that there were some reasons of asking several types of questioning strategies to students, the teacher said that she commonly used repeating/ rephrasing. It was done by the teacher in order to know whether the students understand the material or not. The questioning strategy categorized as narrowing by giving a clue was widely used for looking for certain information from the students. Besides that, narrowing by giving a clue was also used for stimulating the students? opinion about something. Furthermore, giving alternative is also used by the teacher in giving question to the students. But, this kind of strategy is fewer used among others. And the last questioning strategy is by providing wait time. This strategy is also used by the English teacher. The percentage of this strategy is the same as narrowing by giving a clue.
