This research focuses on the hedges found in President of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte?s Inauguration Speech, and the maxims that are marked by hedges found in President Rodrigo Duterte?s Inauguration Speech, that will be proved in this research.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data was used in this research is the script of President Rodrigo Duterte?s Inauguration Speech which as a subjects of this research. In this research, two instruments are used there are reading the script and note taking the relevant data. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively which analyzed using Grice's theory. There are 4 types of maxim in the principle of cooperation i.e, maxim of quality, quantity, relevance and manner. The use of hedges correlated with maxim in cooperative principles was analyzed using the theory put forward by Brown & Levinson. There are 4 types of hedges that correlate with maxim ie, hedges of quality, quantity, relevance and manner.
This research found that manner hedges are the most frequent hedges in this speech. Manner hedges which utterance as clear, as brief, and as orderly as one can in what one says, and avoid obscurity and in this research maxim of quantity are most often found because the speaker gives more or less information than it should. The implications found are as a result of the occurrence of hedges maxim that happened.
