This research aims to describe and discuss the illocutionary acts used by Donald Trump as president- elect on January 11, 2017 in New York. The research questions are what kinds of illocutionary acts used by Donald Trump? and what are the dominant illocutionary acts used by Donald Trump?
The descriptive qualitative (content analysis) method is used to conduct this research. The data is taken from the transcript of Trump's speech as president- elect in a news conference in Manhattan on January 11, 2017. In analyzing the data, the utterances in the speeches are identified by analyzing based on the aspects of linguistic. The utterances are identified by analyzing the form and meaning types of the utterances and collects the data of communication objectively , systematically , and descriptively.
Based on the analysis, the researcher found four types of illocutionary acts used by Donald Trump?s speech as president- elect in a news conference. they are representative (55,66%), directive (17,92%), commissive (13,21%), and expressive (11,32%). The declarative is not found in utterances that used by Donald Trump in his speech because he does not have a special institutional role in a specific context. In addition, the utterances of Trump are mostly in the form of assertive (representative), followed by directive, commissive and then expressive.
