Vocabulary is very important in language learning, because if someone learns language, he or she deals with the vocabulary. The linguist Wilkins states that without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed (Thornbury, 2002: 1). If we spend most of our time studying grammar, your English will not improve very much. But, if we learn more words and expressions, we will see most improvement. We can say very little with grammar, but we can say almost anything with words. So, by using advertisement, the students can learn about vocabulary.
In this study, the purposes are: 1) to know how the teacher teach vocabulary through advertisements, 2) the students? vocabulary mastery after advertisement is implemented, and 3) to know the students responses in teaching vocabulary through advertisements.
This research design used in this study is classroom action research. It meant that an action research which is conducted in a classroom to increasethe students? vocabulary mastery.
The problems occur in teaching vocabulary through advertisements are the students got difficulties when they find the synonym and antonym of some words. The students also were not patient and lazy to find the word in dictionary because find the meaning in the dictionary, it?s not students? habit.
The result of the observation in the students? activities in the teaching and learning vocabulary by using advertisement showed that the teacher didn?t dominate in teaching and learning process. It means that the students were more active than the teacher. Most of the students were enthusiastic and enjoyable in this activity.
Keywords : Teaching, Vocabulary, Advertisement.
