Short story is one of literary works which can be viewed in various aspects. In structuralism, a short story can be analyzed based on the structure. in sociolinguistic, a short story can be analyzed based on the language style and the factor which influence the choices of language style of an writer. O. Henry, one of unique writers who present many short stories which are compatible to be analyzed as object of study.
This research is aimed to analyze the kinds of language style used in O. Henry?s short story, those are the gift of Magi, The Last Leaf and The Furnished Room and to analyze the factors which influence the use of language in O. Henry?s short stories.
The method which is used in collecting data is qualitative data analysis because the researcher collected the data by reading each short story. According to Gay (2000), qualitative methods involve the collection and analysis of primarily non numeral data obtained from observation, interviews, tape recording, and document.
The findings show that O. Henry short stories uses intimate style, one of the most dominant language style in his short stories, the second is consultative and the third is casual style. It can be concluded that for the consultative style, there are 2 findings or 28, 6% of consultative style in ?The Gift of Magi?, 4 findings or 23, 5% of consultative style in ?The Last Leaf,? and 7 findings or 70% of consultative style in ?Furnished Room. In this analysis the casual style also can be found in two short stories in ?The Last Leaf? and ?Furnished Room?. In ?The Last Leaf? there are 2 findings or 11, 8% of casual style and in the ?Furnished Room? there are 3 findings or 30% of casual style. Next, the intimate style only can be found in the ?The Gift of Magi? and ?The Last Leaf?. There are 5 findings or 71, 4 of intimate style in ?The Gift of Magi? whereas in ?The Last Leaf? there are 11 findings or 64, 7% of intimate style. The factors which influence the language style of O. Henry short stories can be found in these short stories. There are four factors which influence an individual?s choice of language style, namely setting, participant, topic, and function.
It can be conclude that language style can be found in the short story and all of factors that influence language style. The writer suggest this study can be useful to other researcher to learn about the language style, especially O. Henry short story
