Language is one of the most fundamental aspects of human?s life. People use language for communication. To understand the meaning in every communication which occurs with language, we are necessary to know the contextual information, like the culture, time and place where the language is uttered. Every utterance refers to different things based on the speaker?s meaning. Deixis shows the phenomenon where in understanding the meaning of certain words and phrases in an utterance requires contextual information. Talk show is one of appropriate object for analyzing deixis because the way in which the interactional characteristics of a talk show are influenced by the interplay of spontaneous talk and an institutional setting can reveal some interesting findings. ?Oprah Winfrey Show? is an appropriate talk show to analyze deixis because here Winfrey as the host is able to conduct interactive and natural interview with J.K Rowling as the guest star. So in this research, the writer carries out the research entitled an analysis of deixis found in the transcription of the interview between Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling as the guest star in Oprah Winfrey Show.
The Objective of this research are: (1) to analyze types of deixis in the talk show of the interview between Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling in Oprah Winfrey Show (2) to analyze frequency of each deixis in the talk show of the interview between rah Winfrey and J.K Rolwing in Oprah Winfrey Show. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research, the data are deixis, the types of deixis, and the frequency of each deixis in Oprah Winfrey Show and the data source is Oprah Winfrey Show.
The result of this research show that, firstly there are five types of deixis words found in the talk show namely, person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. In Winfrey?s utterances, from 78 data, there are 69 or 88,47% belong to person deixis, 4 or 5,13% belong to discourse deixis, 3 or 3, 84% belong to place deixis, 1 or 1,28% belong to place deixis. In Rowling?s utterances, from 295 data, there are 264 or 89,49% belong to person deixis, 23 or 7,80% belong to discourse deixis, 6 or 2,03% belong to time deixis, 2 or 0,68% belong to place deixis.
Finally, it is suggested to further researcher to analyze such conversation or dialogues in term of investigating deixis theory. Deixis is still a broad topic, which needs to be analyzed with many different approaches.
