English has been considered to be important in all levels of education. In order to be able to reach that purpose, the teacher should be selective in choosing the appropriate approach, method and strategy. One specific cooperative learing strategy is Think Pair Share (TPS). Think Pair Share is a useful learning strategy that can beused with all grade levels and all content area subjects. So, in this study, the reseacher tries to use Think Pair Share in teaching reading.
The problem of the study is, ?Is there any significant effectiveness of teaching reading by using Think Pair Share to Improve Students Reading Ability at the Eighth Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 27 Sidokumpul in Academic Year 2015/2016. To answer the problem, the researcher did experimental reseach in SMP Muhammadiyah 27 Sidokumpul in Academic Year 2015/2016. The population of this study is the eighth grades students which consists of 34 students. This population is taken purposively. In this study, there are two groups (experimental and control group ). The experimental treatment is given to experimental group before giving post-test.
The technique of collecting data are both of the groups. The test consists of 20 items. The type of the test is multiple choice with four alternative answers. The time allocation is 30 minutes. In this study, the researcher analyzed the result of test by t-test formula and find that t-test of statistical calculation is 0,68 or t-table 1,67 at level 0.05 for df is 34. Therefore, the results of observation shows that the procedure of Think Pair Share has applied in 90%. It is an excellent behavior in implementing of Think Pair Share. Therefore, it shows that there is significant effectiveness. In conclution, based on the research, this study shows that there is a significant effectiveness of teaching reading narrative text by using Think Pair Share to improve Students Reading Ability at Eighht Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 27 Sidokumpul in Academic Year 2015/2016. Since Think Pair Share, in this research, is proved to be effective to improve the students reading ability, English teacher is then suggested to apply it in their teaching and learning process. Other reseachers are also invited to conduct futher reseach in this field.
