The major character is character in the literary works who has role play as central or leader in drama or fiction, the central of primary personal figure in the novel (Jones, 1968: 31), in The First Phone Call From Heaven novel those major characters are Sullivan Harding, Horace Belfin, Katherine Yellin, and Tess Rafferty.
In this research, the researcher analyzed the characteristic of the major characters, and their social and psychological conflict in The First Phone Call From Heaven novel. The purposes of conducted this research are: 1) to describe the characterizations of the major character?s in The First Phone Call From Heaven, 2) to know the Social and psychological conflict of the major character in The First Phone Call From Heaven, and 3) to describe the resolution of the conflict.
In this research, the data of this study used descriptive method. This study was conducted by reading the novel, collecting the data, analyzing and describing the data in order to get the major character?s characteristic, the social and psychological conflicts, and the resolution of the conflicts.
From this research, the researcher found characteristic of Sullivan Harding, Katherine Yellin and Horace Belfin and their social and psychological conflicts in the novel. Discrimination was faced by Sullivan Harding, when he got imprisoned because of Elliot Gray?s fault. The other is Katherine Yellin had to prove when people disbelieved her about the heaven calling and the opportunist Amy Penn, who took advantages from Katherine condition. In the psychological conflict, Sullivan Harding was battling with his emotion, stress and loneliness. Beside that, the resolutions of those conflicts were also found in the novel. Sullivan Harding knew the truth from the letter was sent by Elliot?s father, after that Sully forgave Elliot. The other is Katherine Yellin proved that she really got the call from heaven in a live broadcast on TV, and people believed that she did not lie, also Amy Penn realized she was wrong and became real friend of her. Lastly, the resolution of Sullivan?s psychological conflict is Sullivan proved that the phone from heaven was only hoax. After that, he can enjoy his life normally, peace, with his son, Jules and his new playmate, Liz.
