Deixis is the word which can be interpreted its meaning based on the context. Then movie is one of the interesting media for language learning. It has great influences in developing English language, especially in the study about deixis.
In this research, the writer discusses the use of deixis on Stephen and Jane in The Theory of Everything. The aims of this research are to describe: 1) the kinds of deixis used by Stephen and Jane in The Theory of Everything, 2) the dominant deixis used by Stephen and Jane in The Theory of Everyhing. The writer analyzes the utterances uttered by both of them while doing conversation.
The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The data is taken from the transcript of The Theory of Everything. The research data of this study are kinds of deixis and the dominant deixis used by Stephen and Jane in The Theory of Everything. To collect the data, she used some steps; watching The Theory of Everything movie, searching script of The Theory of Everything, and reading the script. To analyze the data, the following steps were taken: 1. identifying the utterances; 2. selecting the utterances by classifying them based on the theory of deixis; 3. segmenting the data into fragments; 4. describing the kinds of deixis; 5. calculating the percentage of deixis; 6. finding the dominant kind of deixis; 7. discussing the finding of the study; 8. making conclusion. In analyzing the utterances, the writer used the theory of Yule.
Finally, the result of the research shows that there are three kinds of deixis used by Stephen and Jane in their speaking. Stephen and Jane use three kinds of deixis; they are personal deixis, place (spatial) deixis, and time (temporal) deixis. It is found that personal deixis has 202 deixis words or 86% of the total number, which includes (Stephen: 109 and Jane: 98 deixis words); place (spatial) deixis has 19 deixis words or 8% of the total number, which includes (Stephen: 9 and Jane: 10 deixis words); and time (temporal) deixis has 14 deixis words or 6% of the total number, which includes (Stephen: 6 and Jane: 8 deixis words). So it can be concluded that personal deixis is the dominant kind of deixis used by Stephen and Jane while doing conversation in The Theory of Everything.
