Each student has his own preferred ways in learning. Students? tendencies and preferred ways in learning and how they go about learning will also influence their success. Having different preferences, tendencies, and ways among students in learning English show that students have their own learning style types which also influence their learning outcome. This study is aimed to describe the type of learning styles used by the eighth grade students of Insan Kamil Junior High School in learning English and to know the dominant learning style used by the eighth grade students of Insan Kamil Junior High School in learning English.
In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research. To find out the data completely, the researcher tried to get some informations by several ways. First distributing a questionnaire, which was adopted from Linda Wong Essensial Study Skills(2012), Second, by conducting the observation, and the last, by interview. Observation is used to observe the students? activities when the learning process takes place. While interview and questionnaire were used to obtain some informations about the learning style that they used. The subject of this research are the eighth grade students of Insan Kamil Junior High School. The number in this class are 36 students, which consist of 24 males and 12 females.
This research found that three kinds of learning style were used the eighth grade of Insan Kamil Junior High School in learning English. It is found that 16 students or 44% of students chose visual learning style, 11 students or 31% of the students chose auditory learning style, and 9 students or 25% of the students chose kinesthetic learning style. So, the dominant learning style is used by eighth grade class in learning English class is visual learning style. For further research, therefore, it is expected to study the learning styles of students in terms of learning styles of other models, such as models of Dunn & Dunn, David Kolb models, and so on.
