Improving English language skills does not just aim to the lessons learned by the students, but also concerns to the process and methods of learning. The process includes a model of the curriculum implemented. Regarding to the implementation of the curriculum, English speaking program as extracurricular activity is one model of education which strongly supports in improving the English language skills with supporting activities. The objectives of the research are to describe the methods used for teaching speaking, the kinds of activities used in teaching speaking, and the students? responses to the English speaking program as an extracurricular activity.
This study is included to the qualitative descriptive approach. Subjects of the study were all students in eight grade of SMP Techno Insan Kamil Tuban, the headmaster and the English teacher who teaches the eight grade. And in collecting the data, the researcher used the technique of observation, interviews, questionnaires and documentation. Observation and documentation to address the implementation of speaking program as extracurricular activity, while the questionnaire and interview to students? answer about the implementation of speaking program as activity can improve speaking ability.
Based on the researcher finding of the study, the method used to teach speaking to the students at SMP Techno Insan Kamil Tuban consists of learning and teaching in groups, games, and role play. There are some activities used to teach speaking to the students based on the observation are English day, English club, English speaking level and mastery vocabulary. The result of the research shows that the implementation of speaking program as extracurricular activity to improve the ability to speak at SMP Techno Insan Kamil Tuban has been going well but not be said to succeed. Even though, some reasons according to the students which make speaking are difficult. One of them is grammar; it is said by 43% of them, while 27% of them say that vocabulary also becomes the cause of their difficulties in speaking. Meanwhile, 18% of them state that they are afraid to make mistakes also becomes another difficulty in speaking. It is known from result of questionnaire that 88% of them have the same problems.
