The objectives of this study entitled ?an analysis students errors in writing narrative text at the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Semanding? were to know what kind of error do the students make in writing narrative text and to know what is the highest and the lowest errors made by the students in writing narratie text.
The subjects of this research were 30 of the eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Semanding. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. To collect data the reseracher used writing test. The collected data was identified, classified and analysed based on the types of error using Dulay?s theory.
The results of this research showed that based on the surface strategy taxonomy, the students tanded to make errors in the form of omission (21 errors = 22,34%), in the form of addition (11 errors =11,70 %) and the students tanded to make error in the form of misinformation (54 errors = 57,45%), in the form of misordering (8 errors= 8,51 %) out of total errors (94 errors). The reasons why they made errors because of the student lacked English grammatical rules mastery and different language rules between Indonesian and English languages.
