This study is entitled An Analysis of Indirect Speech Acts in The Fault In Our Stars Movie By Josh Boone. This study is about indirect speech acts used by the main characters in The Fault In Our Stars Movie.
Speech act is the utterance which speaker says or speaker performs in every speech. The study of speech act is very important for us. The importance of studying speech act is to make us comprehend what message discovered in every utterance. Speech act also decided by the language ability of speaker to convey the message in communication.
This study investigates Indirect Speech Acts in The Fault In Our Stars Movie. This research is a library research with qualitative approach. The data cover all utterances used by the characters in The Fault In Our Stars Movie By Josh Boone. In conducting this research the researcher watched the film, downloaded script of The Fault In Our Stars Movie, read the drama script, and identified the data. Then the researcher classified the data into indirect speech acts (the utterances containing Yule?s theory and Searle?s classification). The researcher classified by the utterances which has indirect relationship between the sentence structure and the sentence function. It can be concluded that the dominant indirect speech acts is request in declarative form. It can be shown by the results, there are 10 utterances which consist of requesting act in declarative sentence such as in data 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, and 18.
Finally , it is suggested to further researchers to analyze such conversations or dialogs in terms of investigating speech act theory. Speech act is still a broad topic , which needs to be analyzed with many different approaches.
