The title of this study is ?Flouting and Hedging Maxims in ?Ratatouille? Film.? A particularly silent way of getting an addressee to draw inference and hence an implicature is flouting maxim. Hedging maxim is a kind of expression which show the speaker concern to use a maxim to be a cooperative participant in the conversation (Grundy, 2000: 79-80).
The objectives of the study are to describe the types of maxims that are flouted and/or hedged and to describe and explain how the maxims are flouted and/or hedged in ?Ratatouille? film. This film tells about a french dish in Paris, that a rat named Remy can cook with Chef Auguste Gusteau. This condition leads the characters in the film to flout and hedge the maxims of Cooperative Principles in their conversation.
This study applied qualitative research to analyze the flouting and hedging maxim on Grice?s Cooperative Principle (1975). Using documentation method, the data focused on the film script which retrieved from http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/a2/ratatouille-script-transcript.html. The writer anylized the data by classiying, interpreting and reporting.
The result of the study reveals two points. The first is that from the four maxims of Cooperative principles, the flouting maxim of quantity and the hedging maxim of quality are mostly used by the characters. While maxim of manner is found to be flouted once and hedged can not found because the characters like to give a clear statement without using ambiguous words. Thye second is that not all types of ways of flouting maxim are found; there are only 4 types can be found and applied by the characters. Rhetorical question is mostly used by the characters to flout the maxim of Cooperative Principles. Meanwhile, metaphor is only found once. For hedging maxim, there are only two ways of hedging maxim, the characters like to use ?some say? and ?by the way? are only found once in the data.
