Therefore, students must be able to speak English well because people identify the English mastery with their English speaking. From the researcher`s short experience, she noticed that many teachers teach student passively so the students become passive in English learning and they are not able to speak.

This method is an interesting technique and it can improve students' ability. For this study, the reserarcher not only wants to know the students? response about this method, but also makes three other targets, that are : (1)To examine how information gap activities are used in teaching speaking skill to the second year students in SMP NU Lasem. (2)To indicate benefits as well as problems of applying information gap activities in English speaking class.(3)To find the problems of using IGA as perceived by the teacher and students.
For this study, the researcher uses the qualitative method and get the data in detail and a very specific term but she doesn?t consider to the solutions of the problems. The research emphasizes on the knowledge on the phenomenon and interpret the students and the teacher specification within the classroom activity. And the researcher chose the VII A of SMP NU Lasem which consist 26 students as the subject of study. For this study, the researcher uses observation, questionnaire, and interview to get the data.
After data collection have been analyzed, the writer concludes that during teaching process, students can be more enthusiastic with using information gap picture method. And the results of the survey questionnaires, short interviews and classroom observation indicate that the use of information gap activities in SMP NU Lasem has been moderately effective in the enhancement of speaking skill for the second year students. The teacher is well-aware of the usefulness of information gap activities as a means to inspire learners. The students are motivated greatly and more confident when taking part in these information gap activities.
However, there are still some problems need considering as teachers and students encounter many difficulties with this kind of activity. As for teacher, the most challenges are students who still not confident to speak, and also the limited time to apply the method. To students, the inhibitions and the lack of language are the barriers preventing them from taking part in information gap activities.
