Code switching is a strategy of using two or more languages in the same utterance. Itis a common phenomenon for bilinguals or even multilinguals. ?Rising Star Indonesia?, which is a broadcast TV program, hosted by Boy william in RCTI, is used as the research object about code switching in this research. The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds and functions of code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session.The following are the research questions the writer wishes to answer; what kind of code switching are found in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session and what are the functions of code switching based on the society?s or audience perceptions on code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session.
The writer uses qualitative method to research and analyzed the phenomenon of code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session. According to Mardalis (1995:24) states that a research is a scientific approach to find the truth accurately and objectively in order to get a valid result.While, method is the way which is used in a scientific research. So, it can be said that research method is a strategy to collect and analyze data which are obtained to solve the problem. In order to achieve the purpose of this research, the research used the following instruments to obtain the data; YouTube and questionnaire. The writer usedYouTube to record three episodes of ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session and used questionnaire in order to obtain society?s perception on ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session.The research analyzed the data based on transcribing the utterances. In this study classification of respondents used friends at UNIROW University with the background of English student and 15 of respondent?s.
It wasfound that there are four kinds of code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia?music session, such as situational, metaphorical, intersentential, and intrasentential code switching. The result was also divided into two categories; they are kind of code switching that used by host and expert in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session and the function of host and expert?s code switching in rising star Indonesia music session.The research finds that the functions of code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia? music session are to express participant?s solidarity and status, topic switch, and affective functions. Besides, English and Javanese are the languages used in code switching in ?Rising Star Indonesia? Music session. In this research, the writer found 16 examples sentences of intra-sentential code switching and 23 examples sentences of inter-sentential code switching in Rising Star Indonesia music session. Another result shows that English is the language, which is most frequently used. The host and some other contestants often switch into English incorrectly in order to create an unique situation. In addition, they also often switch into English by inserting some English words in the middle of an Indonesian sentence to show their ability in speaking English.
