Figurative language is not intended to be interpreted in a literal sense. Appealing to the imagination, figurative language provides new ways of looking at the world. It is compares two things there are different in enough ways so that their similarities, when pointed out, are interesting, unique, or surprising. In this study, the writer chooses Cold Play?s ?Ghost Stories? album. This album is chosen to be analyzed because it has some of figurative languages. The purposes are to find the kinds of figurative languages in this album, to find the most dominant figurative language, and to find the simple ways to identify figurative languages containing in songs lyric, especially in Cold Play?s songs.
The research method isqualitative research. It means that this research does not calculate the data and just gives description about figurative languages that is contained in Cold Play?s songswithout formal testing or hypothesis. It is done by writing the songs lyric, classifying the figurative language, and then giving reasons. Having analysis the data, the writer concludes that there are seven figurative languages that found in the songs, such as ellipsis, metaphor, synecdoche, rethoric, repetition, personification, and paradox). It can be used in learning process.
