This research studied the use of politeness strategies in the talk show entitled Oprah Winfrey. It isconducted to find out the kinds of politeness strategies applied by the host and guest and the mostly occurred of the politeness strategies used by the host and guest of ?Oprah Winfrey?.
The descriptive qualitative is used to conduct this research. There are 106 data found in the talk showOprah Winfrey. The data based on transcribing the video. The data were broadcasted on January 28th 2010, October 3th 2010 and January18th 2013.The data are then identified and analyzed by using Brown and Levinson?s politeness strategies to answer the kinds of politeness strategies applied by the host and guest in the talk show.
From data analysis, the writer found that there were four kinds of politeness strategy used by the host and guest of ?Oprah Winfrey? in guiding the talk show such as bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. While the occurrences of each style are as follows: the bald on record strategy was 3.8%, the positive politeness strategy was43.4%, the negative politeness strategy was 42.4%,the off record strategy was 10.3% and the do not perform FTA(say nothing) was 0.00%. So, the positive politeness strategy was the type of positive politeness strategy was mostly used in "Oprah Winfrey" talk show program.
Finally, the writer suggests the next researchers investigate the further study of politeness strategy in the real society since there are so many objects in the surrounding society that can be conducted. The writer also suggests the next researchers explore more theories and the newest theory of politeness strategy to gain more understanding for the further research about politeness strategy.
