Syntax is the study of phrases, clauses, and sentences, in contrast to semantics, syntax is one of the better understood area within linguistic. (Parker and Riley, 2005: 53).
In this study, the writer wants to analyze one of the phrase types and function. It is a prepositional phrase. ?An important elements of English sentences is prepositional phrase, it consists of a preposition (PREP) and its object (O) the object of a preposition is a noun pronoun.?(Betty SchrampferAzar, 1999:A-3).
A prepositional phrase may function as an adverb, adjective, or noun.(Frank, 1972:163). In this research, there are two objectives of the research, they are: 1) to find out the types of prepositional phrase in headlines of the Jakarta post; 2) to find out the function of prepositional phrase in headlines of the Jakarta post.
The writer used qualitative descriptive analysis method. The source of the data is prepositional phrase, it is taken from the headlines of the Jakarta post. One of the newspaper in Indonesia. The writer found 203 types and function of prepositional phrase. They are time (30), place and position(46), direction(24), cause and reason (1), concession (2), purpose (15), accompaniment, (5), addition(2), instrument(1), means(3), in the capacity of (11), source(17), separation(3), possession or origin (4), partition(7), apposition (28), exception(2), reference(1), and example(1). And condition, comparison, degree, manner, material, characterized, arithmetical were not found. And the functions are adverb(139), adjective (48), and nominal (16). The dominant type is place and position.
Finally, the writer suggests the next researcher can use article as a media of analysis, especially the analysis of prepositional phrase. The researcher should look for an article that there are many prepositional phrases, so the researcher can develop knowledge about prepositional phrase.
