In this research, the researcher discusses the use of illocutionary acts on Elsa and Anna in Frozen. The aims of this research are to describe: 1) the kinds of illocutionary acts performed by Elsa and Anna in Frozen, 2) the dominant illocutionary act performed by Elsa and Anna in Frozen. The researcher analyzes the utterances uttered by both of them while doing conversation.
The descriptive qualitative method is used to conduct this research. The data is taken from the transcript of Frozen. The research data of this study are kinds of illocutionary acts and the dominant illocutionary act performed by Elsa and Anna in Frozen. To collect the data, she uses some steps; searching script of Frozen, reading the script, reducing the data, segmenting the data into fragments, identifying the utterances, selecting the utterances by classifying them based on the theory of illocutionary acts. Also, she uses some steps to analyze the data, they are: 1. describing the topic and setting of the story of each fragment; 2. describing the kinds of illocutionary acts; 3. calculating the percentage of illocutionary acts; 4. finding the dominant kind of illocutionary act; 5. discussing the finding of the study. In analyzing the utterances, the researcher uses the theory of Searle and Yule. The utterances are analyzed one by one to know the context and kinds of illocutionary acts used. The researcher also employs content analysis to analyze the data.
To focus on the study, the researcher limits herself to analyze 145 utterances, in fourteen fragments based on the topic. From the analysis, the researcher found five kinds of illocutionary acts used by Elsa and Anna in their speaking. Anna performs four kinds of illocutionary acts; they are representative, directive, commissive, and expressive, whereas Elsa performs five kinds of illocutionary acts; they are representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. It is found that representative (assertive) has 29 utterances or 20% of the total number; directive has 61 utterances or 42% of the total number; commissive has 13 utterances or 9% of the total number; expressive has 38 utterances or 26% of the total number; and declaration (declarative) form is only performed by Elsa, which has 4 utterances or 3% of the total number. So it can be concluded that directive is the dominant kind of illocutionary acts used by Elsa and Anna while doing conversation in Frozen.
Finally, it is suggested to the pragmatics lecturers to use Frozen as additional lecturing materials in teaching and learning process, the students majoring in linguistics to learn pragmatics since it is important to know the intended meaning in communication, and further researchers to analyze reasons for the occurrence of illocutionary acts in one?s speaking in order to get deepest understanding of speech act, especially illocutionary acts on one?s utterances.
