The purposes of this study are to discuss the types of maxim violation and the reasons of utterance which contains maxim violation that appear in ?The Pacifier? movie script. The writer chooses this movie because there are so many maxim violation uttered by some characters in this movie by giving ambiguous statement and say something that is not really true. The characters have varied lying reasons from one another in accordance with the purposes they want to reach.
This study applied qualitative research to analyze the maxim violation based on Grice?s Cooperative Principle (1975). Using documentation method, the data were collected by read, observed, and marked the conversations which contain maxim violation from the movie script. The data focused on the movie script which retrieved from www.dailyscript.com. The writer analyzed the data by identified and listed the data based on four types of maxim violation and found the reasons of utterance which contains maxim violation in ?The Pacifier? movie script from many sources and using the relevant theory related to the study.
The result of this research showed that 28 data contains of maxim violation. There were four types of maxim violated in many conversations that found in the movie script based on Cooperative Principle which are: (1) Violating the Maxim of Quantity, (2) Violating the Maxim of Quality, (3) Violating the Maxim of Relation, and (4) Violating the Maxim of Manner. Violating the maxim of quantity mostly uttered by the characters by giving too short or too much information from what it is expected from the other character. Then the writer also found the reasons of utterance in the conversation which contains maxim violation. They are to hide the truth, to make a save face, to cheer the hearer, avoid to hurting the hearer, and building one?s belief. The reasons varied from one another in accordance with the purposes they want to reach.
