Students who learn English will certainly make errors in their process of learning because learning foreign language is not as easy as learning the native language. The objetive of teaching learning English is that the students are able to communicate with English either spoken or written. There are many kind of English grammar which are learnt by the students. Noun Phrases is one of the lesson in English grammar, that is taught and learnt by the seventh students of SMP N 1 Merakurak Tuban, but most of students still make mistakes or errors in doing writing test. Therefore, the writer has some problems as follows:(1) what kind of errors on the use of noun phrases on writing made by the seventh yaer students for SMP N 1 Merakurak 2015/2016 academic year ?, (2) What are the causes of errors on the use of noun phrases on writing made by seventh year students of SMP N 1 Merakurak 2015/2016 academic year?.
The objectives of the studt are : (1) To identify the kind of errors on the use of noun phrases in writing made the seventh year students of SMP N Merakurak 2015/2016 academic year ?, (2) To find out the causes of errors on the use of noun phrases in writing made the seventh year stydents of SMP N 1 Merakurak 2015/2016 academic year.
The research design that was used in this study is descriptive research which aimed describing the errors made by the seventh students of SMP N 1 Merakurak in 2015/2016 academic year The writer choose randomly D class that consists of 32 students as the sample of this research. In this research the instruments used were: writing test and questionnaire.
The result of analysis show that : (1) the errors on the use of noun phrases on writing made by the seventh students of SMP N 1 Merakurak are 599 occurrences of all errors. Omission errors is 8,01% or 48 occurrences, addition errors is 13 occurrences or 2,17% of the total errors, misformation is 10,19% occurrences and misordering is 79,63% or 477 occurrences. It can be concluded that most of the students make errors in type of misordering, (2) the writer attempts to find out the causes of errors. The causes of errors are interlingual which is caused of the interference of mother tongue and intralingual interference caused by : over- generalization, ignorance of rules restrictions, and falsse concept hypothesized.
The result of the study shows that the students? ability in understanding noun phrases is fair. They can understand it although sometimes they still find some difficulties in using noun phrases.
