WOMAN SOCIAL MOBILITY PORTRAYED IN JANE AUSTEN?S PRIDE AND PREJUDICE NOVEL
In this study, the researcher analyzes Jane Austen?s novel entitled Pride and Prejudice by focusing on Elizabeth?s social mobility as the main character of this novel. Furthermore, to get the proofs that literature is a reflection of a reality at a certain time, the researcher presents the social condition in early 19th century in England. The problems of this study are: 1.What kinds of woman social mobility are portrayed on Elizabeth Bennet as the main character ?2.What efforts does Elizabeth Bennet do to achieve the social mobility? 3.What factors support Elizabeth Bennet?s achievement?
The researcher used qualitative design and applies descriptive analytic method based on the library observation. It means that the researcher does not use numbers or calculation to process the data but put on the quotation taken from the novel and describes them in order to give clear explanation and support her assumption. The subject of the research is the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen while, the object is Elizabeth Bennet?s social mobility.
Procedure of collecting and analyzing data in this research there are: reading and understanding all the content of the novel Pride and Prejudice, identifying the data collected related to the cases, coding uses in order to analyze the data easier, classifying the data collected dealing with the purposes of the study, describing toward paragraphs and dialogue in the novel, interpreting each case of the data that described, and the last making conclusion to draws conclusions based on the quotations of the data, which are appropriate to the cases.
From the analysis, it can be concluded that upward mobility is one kind of social mobility found on Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice novel. And there are some efforts to achieve social mobility done by Elizabeth Bennet concerned with the reality at that time. Elizabeth is an independent woman. She decides to get married based on love not wealth, this is contrary to her mother always insists on her marrying with a man based on wealth. She also builds successfully positive behaviours and good relationship with many people. This study also analyzed the factors that support Elizabeth Bennet social mobility, they are family and education. Elizabeth?s mother wants her to get married with a rich man. For the education, Elizabeth is so good in playing piano. Finally, Mr.Darcy falling in love with her. They get married and lived happily ever after.
