Role play can be applied in the teaching of speaking. This assumption is beside on some experts? comments. Role play can be used to develop or reinforce concept, to add diversion to regular activities, or just to break the ice. The students are easier to receive the lesson by using role play. They can enjoy studying and the students have fun in studying.
In this study there are three problems stated as follows: (1) How is role play applied in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill; (2) How far is the effectiveness of role play in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill; and (3) What are the students? responses towards the use of role play to improve students speaking skill.
The purpose of this study are (1) to describe how role play can be applied in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill; (2) to know the effectiveness of role play in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill; and (3) to know the students? responses towards the use of role play in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill.
The design used in this research is a classroom action research because to it is aimed at improving students speaking skill in transactional and interpersonal text of asking and giving opinion. The writer carried out the study by using some instruments such as observation, test, and questionnaire.
After collecting the data, the writer analyzed them by calculating the difference between the mean of cycle I andcycle II. The result of this analysis shows that there is significant difference between cycle I and cycle II namely (66.6) and (73.97). So, the writer concludes that there is significant difference between cycle I and cycle II which means that teaching English using role play can improve the students? speaking skill.
