Dictation technique of listening is order to encourage students in learning English. The teacher should carefully select the dictation technique so that the students are not beyond the students level of proficiency. This research applied dictation technique to improve student?s listening mastery especially in listening test. One of listening tests which is suitable for measuring students achievement in mastering listening material is dictation (oller : 1993).

This researcher wants to know the influence of this technique in student?s listening mastery and to know the advantage and the weakness of dictation which is implemented to the seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 16 Brondong as the subject of the study. There are 25 students as the subject of the study in this class.

This research design used collaborative classroom action research (CAR) in which the researcher and her collaborator worked together on designing the lesson plans, applying the action, observing the effect of action and reflecting the result of the action. In conducting the research, the researcher was the practitioner while the collaborator became the observer. The research was carried out in two cycles following the action research procedure, i.e, planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The first and the second cycle were qualitative and quantitative to obtain the data from the student?s score of listening proficiency. While qualitative data was used to obtain from the questionnaire and observation of the student?s activity and the teacher?s activity. The researcher carried out the study by using some instruments such as listening test, observation checklist and questionnaire.

After collecting data the researcher conclude that implementation dictation technique made the student?s enthusiastic and more interested in listening test and they were able to get better score.

Based on the findings, the researcher can conclude that by using dictation technique the students were more interested and enthusiastic. Besides that, the students more understand to answer present the result of the discussion.
