Because speaking English, the students often have problems such as nervous, afraid, and limited vocabularies. almost every students use communication strategies to solve their problems, especially for Speaking skill if the students would to get good score in Speaking achievement they must solve their difficulties using communication strategies. Besides that, the reason such as reluctance, lack of motivation, uninteresting teaching technique can make them feel difficult to speak clearly. From it, the writer chose discussion to know the communication strategies used by the students in their speaking. The writer chose Madrasah Aliyah ASSALAM Bangilan because that is Islamic boarding school and every student must speak English every day.
Based on the background above, the objectives of the study are to know the types of communication strategies used in discussion by students of the eleventh at Madrasah Aliyah ASSALAM Bangilanand knowthe correlation between the students? communication strategies used in discussion and their English speaking achievement of the eleventh at Madrasah Aliyah ASSALAM Bangilan.
The writer used quantitative descriptive research design; the subject of the study is the students at the eleventh grade of Madrasah Aliyah ASSALAM Bangilan. In this study, the data were collected by observing discussion activity, score of speaking test, documentation photos of discussion activity and list of the students from the XI B.
Based on the data which have been analyzed, the writer found there are seven (7) types of communication strategies used by the students in discussion, they are message abandonment, circumlocution, use of nonlinguistic means, literal translation, code switching, appeal for help and use of fillers/hesitation devices. However, five communication strategies namely topic avoidance, approximation, use of all purpose words, word coinage and foregnizing were not found. The students? with lower ability used few types of communication strategies, they are message abandonment ,circumlocution, code switching and use of fillers/hesitation devices. However the students with high ability use many types of communication strategies, they are message abandonment, circumlocution, use of nonlinguistic means, literal translation, code switching, appeal for help and use of fillers/hesitation devices. The dominant type of communication strategy is fillers/hesitation devices.
