AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG EXPRESSION TRANSLATION IN MOVIES ENTITLED ?HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL?

Slang is most used in western movies nowadays especially teenager movie. This kind of language of course can raise problems for Indonesian audience, because the differences in cultural value between America and Indonesia. If those slang language occur in Indonesia, they some times are not translated into Indonesian, translated incorrectly or just deleted. People use slang language in their life to communicate with other. They use this word without understanding more deeply about it because they just follow these words from TV, movie, magazine, song lyrics, social network, and many more.
This study concerns with the descriptive analysis of slang expression in High School Musical movies directed by Kenny Ortega, Produced by Walt Disney Pictures. This study proposes some problems; the slang expression found, the meaning, and also the translation from the subtitle in the movies.
Through this paper, the writer covers 102 slang expressions in three movies of High School Musical Series. It includes 73 slang words and 29 slang phrases. The writer also covers slang expression meaning in the High School Musical movie series is based on the figurative meaning because the writer used specific dictionary which called slang dictionary to get the right meaning. Meanwhile the translation from the movies subtitles, the writer covers 42 translations of slang expression equivalent so made the translation clear to understand, also based on the nonequivalent translation, the writer covers 39 translations which contained slang expression from the subtitle in the movies translated incorrectly in Indonesian, 4 translations of the slang expressions gone from the subtitle, and 17 translations of slang expression didn?t translate to Indonesian but still exist in the subtitle so made the translation unclear to understand.
In sum, this study shows that there are many aspects of slang language which can be analyses more deeply to increase our knowledge and new vocabulary.
