AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH METAPHORS IN ANDREA HIRATA?S EDENSOR
In this research, the writer discusses the use of metaphors on Andrea Hirata?s Edensor. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of metaphors used in Edensor, and to understand the meaning of phrases or sentences that use metaphors which are selected by the writer.
The writer uses qualitative research. The writer collects the data from the novel, then classified them into types of metaphors. Based on the theories provided, the data are analyzed one by one to know the types of metaphors used, and the meaning of them. To focus on the study, the writer limits herself to analyze thirty data metaphors.
There are, 1 dead metaphors (3,3%), 5 clich? metaphors (16,6%), 15 standard metaphors (50%), 2 adapted metaphors (6,6%,) 2 recent metaphors (6,6%), 4 original metaphors (13,3%). They are collected from forty chapters. From the data above, the writer found that most of types of metaphors used in Hirata? Edensor is standard metaphors.
Their meanings are explained in their literal meanings, so that they can show the influence of using metaphors in the phrases or sentences. The writer concludes that metaphors is commonly used in daily life, not merely used in particular work to the purpose of the poetic imagination or the rhetorical flourish. Metaphorical expressions may give deeper understanding than literal one because they are more expressive and evokes a particular sense which can help the readers to conceive what the author means.
