In this study, the researcher chooses ?six songs lyrics of The Beatles?which is composed by John Lennon (?Instant Karma?, ?I am the Walrus? and ?Across the Universe?) and Paul McCartney (?She?s a Woman?, ?Hey Jude? and ?Honey Pie?). The purposes are to identify kind of figurative languages in The Beatles songs and to know dominant figurative languages in The Beatles songs.
The research method is descriptive qualitative descriptive. It means that it is just gave description about content of this research and it does not calculate data of this research. Descriptive method was done by describing facts, and then continued by analysis the reasons and just gives description about figurative languages that is contained in The Beatles? song lyric. It is done by ccollecting the song and transcript lyric of The Beatles, listening the song, reading and understanding lyrics of The Beatles, identifying the figurative language that are used in the Beatles? song lyric, and then selecting the data that is relevant with the purpose.
Results of this research are to find figurative languages (Personification, Irony, Simile, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Paradox, Metonymy, and Allusion). Due to the six songs lyrics have two composers, the researcher tried to find the differences about two composeds. Firstly, the dominant of figurative language of the three songs lyrics composed by John Lennon is personification. And the other three songs lyrics composed by Paul McCartney are dominated by metaphor. Secondly, the use of figurative language in Lennon?s songs tend to be poetical senses, his songs are quite strange for some people, hard to be understood, and contradictive while Paul McCartney uses figurative languages in his lyrics to make a beautiful sense, conceptual and easy to be understood. This research is expected to be additional knowledge about figurative languages and learning sources for teacher and students. Moreover, it can be reference for the future research related to this study.
