Scientific Approach is defined as the usual process of finding out information in science, which involves testing the ideas by performing experiments and making decisions based on the results. This approach has five steps in teaching and learning process, they are observing, questioning, associating, experimenting, and networking. Reading comprehension is a major pillar in the activity of reading in which readers build an understanding of a text. Reading recount has the purpose to provide information or to entertain the reader about the events or experiences in the past.
The objective of the research is to know how far is the effectiveness of using Scientific Approach in reading comprehension of recount text at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Brondong in the academic year of 2014/2015 and to describe the students? responses to the use of Scientific Approach in reading comprehension of recount text.
The method that is used in this study is experimental research. The subject of the study is the eighth grade of D of SMPN 1 Brondong in the academic year of 2014/2015. The data were collected by test (pre-test and post-test), and questionnaire. For evaluating the student?s achievement the researcher uses test (pre-test and post-test), and the researcher uses questionnaire to know the students? responses toward the use of Scientific Approach.
The finding of the study are stated that teaching reading comprehension of recount text through Scientific Approach is effective. It can be inferred from the result of statistic calculation which have been done by the researcher. It was obtained the value of T-value (to) is 8,19. This value is higher than T-table (tt) at degree of freedom (df) 0,1% = 3,674. The students? responses are positive toward the use of Video Presentation. So, the researcher conclude that teaching reading comprehension of recount text through Scientific Approach has positive effect on the students of eighth grade of D of SMPN 1 Brondong in the academic year of 2014/2015.
