Tandem activity is one of teaching learning strategy which can be applied in class activity, especially in speaking class. It can improve the speaking ability of students by making group to make conversation. The advantages of this strategy can make the students speak up more effectively, make the students more confident and accustomed to speaking English in front of class. They can add their vocabularies with their friends.
The writer as the researcher wants to know the effect of this strategy in the students? ability especially in speaking skill and to know the advantages and weakness of tandem activity applied to the eighth year students of SMP NEGERI 5 TUBAN as the subject of research, 36 students who sit in VIII-A class were the subject of the research this study.
This study use quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data is used to obtain the data from the students? score of speaking proficiency. While qualitative data was used to obtain the data from questionnaire and classroom observation. The writer carried out the study by using some instruments such as speaking test, observation check list and questionnaire.
After collecting the data, the writer can conclude that the applying tandem strategy gave influences in speaking skill of the students. It showed that the students? speaking ability improved after using tandem strategy. The students were able to get better score.
Based on the finding above, the writer concludes that using tandem strategy in teaching speaking in junior high school can make the students confident to speak, more effective, to express their opinion with their friends. This strategy also helps the teacher create interesting material in teaching learning process.
