This study is intended to report a case study on (1) kinds of Communication Strategies used by English teachers of English Action Babat; and (2) the reasons of English teachers of English Action Babat using communication strategies in the classroom to reach the goals of teaching and learning English to young learner.
This study uses descriptive qualitative method by using theory of communication strategy features by Long (2005). The subjects of this study are two teachers of English Action Babat. The main instrument of this study is the researcher herself. The data of this study are from the communication strategies used by the teachers of English Action Babat based on video recording of observations and interviews, and field notes.
The data obtained from observations (through videotaping), and interviews indicate that the teachers deploy several communication strategies with different reasons in teaching. From data analysis, it shows that the kinds of communication strategies used by the teachers of English Action Babat are clarification request, other repetitions, and mother tongue for verbal communication strategies; facial expression and body movements for nonverbal communication strategies. It can be concluded that communication strategies used by the teacher are to make teaching activities runs smoothly and to minimize the problems in the teaching and learning English process.
