Speaking is an important skill for the students in learning English. When the teacher teaches English at school, they will find some students with their problems in speaking skill. English teacher must have responsibility in order to solve the problems faced by the students in learning English. One of some effective techniques in teaching speaking that can be applied is Talking Stick Game. Talking Stick Game can be used in teaching English. And Talking Stick Game can be used in various kinds of text, such as Descriptive text. However, there are many problems faced by the students, such as the students cannot arrange the steps of speaking descriptive text. To make the students interested in material, using Talking Stick Game is expected to make the students not feel bored and can accept the lesson happily and easily. For those reasons, the researcher chooses ?Improving the Students? Speaking Ability in Descriptive Text by Using Talking Stick Game at Seventh Grade of SMP N 2 Palang?.
The purpose of the study is 1) To describe the application of talking stick game in improving the students? speaking ability in descriptive text, 2) To know the talking stick game can improve the students? speaking ability in descriptive text, and 3) To know the students? responses toward the use of talking stick game in teaching and learning the descriptive text.
This research, uses descriptive - qualitative research design. She used observation checklist, test, and questionnaire to obtain the data. The researcher took the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 Palang as the subject of this study.
The result of the study shows that the talking stick game can improve the students? speaking ability in descriptive text run well. The students? mean score from the first test was 67,67 and from the second test was 87,55. From this result, we know that by using talking stick game the students? can improve speaking ability in describing people. Furthermore, from the result of the questionnaire, the students had good responses toward talking stick game. They enjoyed the process of teaching and learning because they were active when they studied by using talking stick game. In conclusion talking stick game can improve the students speaking ability and give positive responses for the students.
