This study is aimed at describing Communication Strategies used by students with different level of Communication Apprehension level in UNIROW Tuban. It includes kinds of Communication Strategies, and the reasons of the use of Communication Strategies used by the fourth semester student with different level of Communication Apprehension.
In this research, the writer used mixed method study, involving both the quantitative and qualitative analysis.The data of this research are the students? verbal (utterances) and nonverbal (gestured and mime) used during speaking in their presentation. The source data of this research is the students? talks and behavior in their presentation during speaking class. The subject of this research were students with different Communication Apprehension levels at the 4th semester of English Education study program at UNIROW Tuban. The writer divide 6 students into 3 level of communication Apprehension(high communication apprehension, moderate communication apprehension, low communication apprehension). The data were collected by using some instruments namely questionnaire, observation, and interview. The questionnaire was used to know the students level of Communication Apprehension, while the kinds of Communication Strategies were gathered by observing and recording the students during their performance in front of speaking class, then the interview was to know the students? reasons of using Communication Strategies.
The result of this study shows that there are 6 kinds of CS used by the students with high of CA. There are 5 kinds of CS used by student with moderate of CA. There are 9 kinds of CS used by student with low of CA. However, two Communication Strategies namely approximation and foreignizing were not used by all of the students. Even though, the students with low of CA used more number of CS but the frequency of using CS is less than the student from others level. The reasons of using communication strategies were quite similar for all the students of different level of CA students. They thought that the main problems that they faced during communication in front of class was feeling nervous which influenced their speaking ability such as forgeting the word that they wanted to say and sometimes they felt stuck/blank because they didn?t know what they wanted to say. The students thought that CS could help them to overcome their difficulty and help them to speak in front of class smoothly.
