This study aims to analyze the use of house plan as visual media in teaching speaking descriptive text to improve the students? speaking ability. The subject of this study is the first grade students of SMKN 1 Singgahan which is from class X AK-2 of accountancy department. In this study, the research design used is classroom action research where the researcher acts as the teacher researcher. To gain the data, the researcher employed several techniques that were appropriate for the purposes of the study. They were observation, test, questionnaire, and documentation.
By using house plan as a medium to teach speaking descriptive text, it proved that the use of house plan was able to improve the students? speaking ability in descriptive text. In a class of 25 students, 80% of the students got higher scores on the final test than their previous speaking scores and 80% students passed the minimum score that the researcher defined which was 75. The calculation of t-test also indicated positive result. The result of t-score 7.61 was higher than t-table 2.064. The result of the questionnaire showed that most of the students strongly agreed that learning speaking using visual media like house plan was fun, interesting, and enjoyable. Furthermore, 100% students were able to perform a simple descriptive monologue in front of the class without relying on notes while speaking. The students? speaking competences also improved including vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and grammar. It means that teaching speaking using house plan as visual media was effective in improving the students? speaking ability in descriptive text.
