POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED BY THE CHARACTERS IN MULAN MOVIE

Politeness is relative, which means it varies depending on the location, time, and surroundings. Politeness was important in maintaining a good relationship with others. To accomplish the aim or desire of a harmonious relationship between the speaker and the hearer, there are some communication strategies that can be used, called politeness strategies. In a movie, politeness is also used in conversation and contact with other characters. This research focuses on the politeness strategies used by the six characters in Mulan movie. This research aimed to find out the kinds of politeness strategies in Mulan movie and the most dominant type of politeness strategies. The researcher used descriptive-qualitative to collect the data and assisted with ATLAS.ti software for data coding. In analyzing the data, the researcher employed Brown and Levinson?s (1987) politeness theory. The findings of this research showed that the six characters applied four politeness strategies: bald on-record (117), positive politeness (40), negative politeness (35), and off-record (13). The most dominant type is bald on-record. In this case, it is proven that the six characters mostly applied bald on-record strategy to show great urgency, clarity, efficiency, and impositions towards other characters, especially during the war.
