Reading is one of the most important skills that should be mastered and acquired by students. Reading can be a stepping stone for students in order to be success in their studies and in their life. Without an ability to read effectively, students will be lose the opportunities in their education and in their real life situation in the future. In teaching and learning, especially in teaching reading the teachers should be able to make their teaching reading interesting, enjoyable, and help the students to comprehend the text easily by using appropriate techniques. Therefore, the teachers should be creative to use effective technique. There are various techniques used to teaching reading, one of them is Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique.
This study applied the quantitative approach to answer the research questions. The study was conducted at SMPN3 Sale, which need four instrument such as pretest, treatment, post test and documentation. The subject of this study is students of the seventh grade of SMPN 3 Sale at the second semester academic year 2017/2018.
The finding of this study that using Small Group Discussion was effective in reading descriptive text in the seventh grade of SMPN 3 Sale. the students? pre-test and post-test score in the percentage and criteria was different. After using small group discussion technique in teaching and learning the table 4.4 and 4.5 show that criteria score of A+ grade has increased from 0% to 0.15%, A grade has increased from 0% to o.45%, B grade has increased from 0.05% to 0.4%, C grade has decreased from 0.05% to 0%, and D grade has decrease percentage from 0.9% to 0%. In conclusion, it shows that after using small group discussion as a technique to teach reading descriptive text had increased than before using small group discussion technique.
