English plays a key role in human lives. It is nowadays considered to be an inevitable part of general education for people practically all over the world. Having at least basic knowledge of it is more or less necessary for everyone. People meet English everywhere and every day. They need it for their job when they are dealing with their foreign business partners, they need it for their study because many specific articles are written in English for its wide international usage; they need it in their personal lives because they want to meet other cultures, travel abroad and that requires the ability of speaking another language.
English is importance, because English has become an international language, a language which is communicated and understood in nearly every part of the world. In Indonesia, English is taught from the lowest level of education to the highest level or from elementary school to universities. The basic English skills that the students should master are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking plays a key role in international communication. Some problems may occur in teaching speaking, therefore, cooperative learning is a way to solve some problems in teaching speaking. Here, the problem that the researcher investigated are: ?The effectiveness of using talking stick game in teaching speaking at the second grade of Madrasah Berbasis Bahasa An-Nur and the student?s responses towards the use of talking stick in their class?.
The design in this research is a quasi experimental with pre-test and post-test design. The researcher taught speaking by using Talking Stick at the second grade of Madrasah Berbasis Bahasa An-Nur. The population of the research is 15 students from A class as Experimental Class and 15 students from B class as controlled class. The researches did it on 9th July 2017 ? 12th July 2017. After the data was analyzed, the result of this study showed that, the value of Tcount is 28.20 and the value of Ttable from the degree of freedom 28 is 2.048. In other word the Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. So, it can be concluded that there is any significant effect of using Talking Stick between experimental class and controlled class. While from the results of interview, it is shown that most students have the positive responses towards the use of talking stick in their class.
