This research is conducted to analyze psychological conflict. Many people do not know what psychological conflict is, but they certain use this conflict in their situation. It is the person why the writer studied psychological conflict.
This research in divided in two research problem. First, what kinds of psychological conflict are experienced by Pi? and the second, what messages are conveyed through the psychological conflicts experienced by Pi? The objective of the study are to know the kinds of psychological conflict experienced by Pi and to know the messages conveyed through the psychological conflict experienced by Pi.
This research was categorized as a library research by using documentation as the method in collecting data. In collecting data, the researcher uses some steps such as: a) Reading Life of Pi novel repeatedly, b) Understanding the content of the novel, c) Finding out the data related to research problems, d) writing significance note, e) organizing the data. Meanwhile the process of data analysis are: a) Reading the novel repeatedly, b) extracting the message, e) concluding data analysis. The object of this study was Life of Pi novel written by Yann Martel.
The result showed that main character?s psychological conflicts can be categorized in to three: 1) Approach-Approach-Conflict, 2) Approach-Avoidance-Conflict, 3) Avoidance-Avoidance-Conflict. From all of the data the dominant is Approach Avoidance Conflict. Meanwhile based on psychoanalysis theory the psychological conflict can be categorized into three: 1) Id, 2) Ego, and 3) Superego. From all of the data Ego is the most dominant conflict. Then, the message conveyed trough the psychological conflict are: 1) Friendly, 2) Sincerity, and 3) Superego.
