This study is a pragmatics study. The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the types of politeness principles in the main characters? utterances in Miracles From Heaven, and to (2) describe the dominant politeness maxim used by the main characters in Miracles From Heaven.
This research was descriptive qualitative. It was concerned with the description of the data in the form of utterances produced by the characters in which politeness principles exist. There were two sources in this research. The primary source was the script. The secondary source was movie entitled Miracles From Heaven published on 2016. In conducting this research, the researcher (1) identified the data and then categorized them, (2) classified the categorized data, (3) analyzed the classified data, (4) interpreted the data, (5) reported the findings and (6) presented the data in the discussion. To achieve data trustworthiness, the data sheets were repeatedly checked by the researcher and some peers.
In the application of the politeness principles, Miracles From Heaven? main characters mostly applied Tact Maxim. Tact maxim occurs 16 times. It is followed by approbation maxim which takes place 14 times. The third position is agreement maxim which happens 13 times. The fourth position is generosity maxim which happens 12 times, the fifth position is sympathy maxim which takes place twice 11 times and the last position is modesty maxim which take place 3 times. Tact maxim gets the highest position because the main characters are concerned more with giving benefit to other or the hearer. All of the main characters prefers to choose using the tact maxim during the conversation. By using this strategy, the speaker shows her respect to the hearer.
